Currently leading the ‘Countering Violent Extremism & Reintegration Initiative’, Dean Piedmont graduated from Denver University’s Graduate School of International Studies in 2002 with a Masters in International Administration.  He is a seasoned programme and policy expert in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and livelihoods specializing in Child Protection, Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) for fifteen years including economic, political, psychosocial, social reintegration, youth and gender.  A former Peace Corps Volunteer, he served government, bilateral and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), including ten years with the United Nations (UN) from 2004-2014.  Prior to entering the UN, he worked with the Research Triangle Institute in Iraq leading institutional assessments for youth departments, directed humanitarian operations in Afghanistan, and served in Sierra Leone as Program Manager for Child Protection with The International Rescue Committee.  Upon entering the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), he served from 2004-2006 in Afghanistan as Deputy Senior Programme Advisor assisting in the development of the Commander Incentive, Community Security Projects and the DDR effort.  While in South Sudan in 2007-2008, he held the positions of Deputy Regional Coordinator for the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and Children and Specific Needs Group Reintegration Manager under UNDP.  In 2009, Dean joined UNDP’s Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery in New York managing a global portfolio of twenty-two reintegration programs.  He served as the lead training coordinator partnering with DPKO, the World Bank, Folke Bernadotte Academy, Norwegian Defense College, the Monterey Center for Stabilization and Reconstruction Studies and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping and Training Center, and in 2015 assumed the role as the Director for the Peacebuilding, Reintegration and Stabilization Assessment Group.  In this capacity he supports Reintegration and Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) with US Government the UN and World Bank.  He designs and teaches graduate courses as Lecturer and Adjunct Professor in US universities, and designs curricula for peacekeepers oriented towards CVE and asymmetric conflict environments.
